Junior midfielder Ryan Silveira, who scored twice within a 6:31 span in the first half of the 4-1 soccer win over Moravian College on Saturday night, has been named the U.S. Merchant Marine men's athlete of the week.
Silveira was honored for the week ending on Sunday, Oct. 16.
The Katy, Texas native lifted the hosts into the lead at 31:57 as his fired home a long-range shot past goalkeeper Mike Brand Less than two minutes later John Pavia equalized after a superb run down the right side before he powered one in past keeper Gary Poulin.
After that game, it was all Mariners, as they struck for three unanswered goals. Silveira lobbed Brand from 35 yards to give Kings Point a 2-1 lead it would never relinquish at 38:28.
The Mariners (8-5-1, 3-1-1) will host Drew University (12-2, 3-1) in their home regular-season finale in a Landmark Conference match at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday before visiting Susquehanna next Saturday at noon.
"It's going to be one of our toughest games," Mariners coach Mike Smolens said. "Drew's always an excellent team and is always a big challenge for us. I know it's going to be an excellent game."
