KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- Ben Fleri scored in the 65th minute to give Catholic University a 2-1 Landmark Conference win over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Tomb Field on Saturday afternoon.
Defender Hollis Irvine scored the Mariners' lone goal of the match in the 57th minute to even the match at 1-1.
The Mariners fell to 2-1-1 in the league and 7-4-1 overall while the Cardinals took over first in the conference with a 3-0-0 mark and 8-3-0 overall record.
Mike Brennan gave Catholic a 1-0 lead with his team-best sixth goal at 21:28 before Irvine equalized at 56:52.
Fleri broke the deadlock at 64:28, the second game in a row that he netted the game-winner.
The Cardinals finished with an 11-9 shot advantage in shots, while Kings Point led in corner kicks, 5-1.
Kings Point goalkeeper Gary Poulin and his Catholic counterpart Torsten Meuschke each made one save.
"We came out slowly and Catholic had the better of play in the first half," Mariners coach Mike Smolens said. "We made some adjustments at the half and we were pleased how we played much of the second half, getting back the goal after about 10 minutes.
"Although we created some good chances in the second half, we just didn't have enough to grab the lead and couldn't come back once they scored the go-ahead goal. We're disappointed with the result and will need to bounce back quickly."
