Mariners Earn Key Skyline Victory At Farmingdale State, 15-8

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 18, 2019) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team defeated Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State, 15-8, on Thursday night for a big league victory at the Rams' Outdoor Complex. With the triumph, the Mariners improve to 8-4 (3-1 Skyline), while also handing FSC its first conference loss, dropping the Rams to 10-4 overall (3-1 Skyline). 

The game was back and forth throughout the first quarter-plus, as Merchant Marine scored the first three goals of the night, but were answered right back by the hosts with three-straight. After the Mariners scored the next two, Farmingdale responded by tying the score once again with a tally at the end of the first quarter and another early in the second. 

USMMA finished the half strong, however, recording four of the final five goals to take a 9-6 lead into the halftime break. 

The Mariners completely shutout the Rams in the third quarter, and they found the back of the net six more times to extend their advantage to 15-6. The final two goals of the game came in the fourth quarter by FSC, but the Merchant Marine defense stood strong all half, to help secure the victory. 

Sophomore goalie Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) earned the victory after playing the first half and making four saves, while junior Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) had a great second half, finishing with five saves and just the two goals against. 

Junior Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) led all players in the game with seven points on four goals and three assists, while classmate Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) registered five points on the night (three goals and two helpers). Seniors Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) and Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) both had multi-goal nights, as Renard found the back of the net four times and Rodriguez tallied two goals. Also finding the scoresheet for the Mariners were sophomore Tristan Kelehan (Elkridge, Md.) with a goal and an assist and senior Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.) with one tally. 

In the faceoff-X, junior Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) won 14-of-18 draws and picked up a game-high 10 groundballs. Defensively, Merchant Marine forced 12 total turnovers, with Connors and junior Adam Behrndt (Glenmoore, Pa.) both leading the way with three CTs each, while Morsberger had two. Behrndt and junior Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) were both second on the squad with four groundballs each. 

For the Rams, senior AJ Sandorfi recorded a team-best six points on five goals and one assist. Senior James Ragland was the only other FSC player to record a multi-point night, as he scored twice. In net, senior Dan Wood suffered the loss after despite making 12 saves over three quarters of action. Junior John McMahon won a team-best five faceoffs, sophomore Brodie Culkin led the Rams with five groundballs and junior Brandon Felice tied for the game-high with three caused turnovers. 

Up next, the Mariners will host Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary next Wednesday, April 24, on Senior Night and Teague Murphy '02 Remembrance Night.
