MEDFORD, Mass. (May 9, 2018) – The 2018 USMMA men's lacrosse season came to an end on Wednesday after a 25-8 loss to #6 Tufts University in the second round of the NCAA Championships at the Jumbos' Bello Field. The Mariners end the year with a 14-3 record, while Tufts improves to 17-1 and advance to the third round, where they will take on #15 Ithaca this weekend.
The Jumbos scored the first 13 goals of the game in the first 21 minutes. The Mariners got on the board with thee of the next four to pull within 14-3, but they trailed 18-3 at halftime. After Tufts extended its advantage to 23-5 after three quarters, Merchant Marine outscored the Jumbos 3-2 in the final 15 minutes to finish the scoring.
Senior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) led the Mariners with five points on two goals and three assists, while classmates Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) both had two points apiece – Coll found the back of the net twice and Dodson recorded a goal and an assist.
Freshmen Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) and Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) split the goalie duties, with Kane playing the first half and making 10 saves, while Byrne finished the final 30 minutes and made seven saves.
In the face-off X, sophomore Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) won 10-of-21 draws and picked up a team-best seven groundballs, while freshman Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) had three face-off victories. Senior Max Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.) led the Mariner defense with two caused turnovers.
Tufts' freshman Garrett Samuelson led all players in the game with six points (five goals, one assist), as a total of 15 different Jumbos found the scoresheet. Junior face-off man Henry Hollen won 10-of-11 draws and picked up a game-high eight groundballs. Senior goalie Robert Treiber made nine saves in the first half and was credited with the victory. He was replaced by junior Ben Shmerler, who recorded five saves in the final 30 minutes.
The 2018 USMMA men's lacrosse season was the best in Academy history. The Mariners won a program-record 14 games and recorded their first-ever NCAA postseason victory with the first-round victory over Johnson & Wales on Tuesday. Among the many highlights were capturing the Skyline Conference Championship, Treon becoming the all-time career record holder for points and finishing the season with 109 points (and his career with 286 points) and Coll setting a new NCAA Championship record for goals in a game with 12 on Tuesday against Johnson & Wales.
