Mariners Claim #1 Overall Seed In Skyline Tournament With 18-9 Road Win At Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (April 21, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team visited Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary on Saturday in a showdown of the two remaining undefeated teams in the conference. The Mariners came away with a big 18-9 victory over the Knights to improve to 10-2 (5-0 Skyline), while MSMC falls to 11-5 (4-1 Skyline). 

With the victory, the Mariners have clinched the #1 overall seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Tournament. 

Junior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) led all players in the game with eight points on five goals and three assists, while senior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) added seven on five goals and two helpers. Senior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) both had four points each – Coll on three tallies and one assist and Connors on a goal and three helpers. 

Sophomore Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) added a hat-trick with three goals and freshman Nick Alberici (Auburn, N.Y.) also found the back of the cage. Freshman Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) and senior Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas) dished out one assist apiece to round out the Mariner scorers. Buser also won 24-of-29 face-offs and picked up 19 groundballs.

In goal, freshman Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) earned the victory with just over 52 minutes of action, in which he made seven saves. Classmate Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) finished out the final seven-plus minutes and only faced one shot. Defensively, sophomore Nick Vinberg (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) tied for the game-high with two caused turnovers. 

Mount St. Mary was led by senior Dylan De Meo, who dished out four assists. Classmates Nicholas Graziano and Danny Kugler both scored three times each and three other Knights registered a goal on the day, with sophomore Ryan Maraio recording a goal and an assist. 

Senior defender Gregory Ruocco picked up a team-high five groundballs, while senior goalie Christopher Doerr made nine saves in over 34 minutes of action, suffering the loss. In relief, sophomore Eli Laikin made seven saves in over 25 minutes during the second half. 

The Mariners close out the regular season next Saturday, April 28, at home against Purchase College. Prior to the start of the contest, the Mariners will pay tribute to their nine graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony. Opening face-off is scheduled for 12-noon at Brooks Stadium.
