BUENA VISTA, Va. (March 7, 2018) – On Wednesday night, the USMMA men's lacrosse team defeated Southern Virginia, 19-9, at SVU's Knight Field. The Mariners improve to 2-0 on the young season, while the Knights fall to 4-2.
Once again, senior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) led all players in the game in points, as he recorded seven of them on a game-high five goals and two assists. Classmate Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) both contributed hat-tricks with three goals apiece, while junior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) added two goals and an assists.

Racking up assists for USMMA were sophomore Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) with two, and Dodson and junior Lane Schmidt (North East, Md.) with one apiece.
Between the pipes, freshman Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) made four saves in three quarters of action to earn the victory, while classmate Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) had five stops in the fourth quarter.
Buser was 15-for-20 on faceoffs and led all players on the night with 13 groundballs, while junior Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) won four faceoffs and had three GBs.
The Mariners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening seven minutes and finished the first quarter with a 6-2 lead. It was nearly all Merchant Marine in the second quarter, as the Mariners scored the first four goals and ended with five of the six tallies in the stanza to take an 11-3 lead into the halftime break.
The Knights got on the board first in the third quarter, but USMMA went on its best stretch of the game, finding the back of the net five-straight times to go up 16-4. The two teams traded goals to end the quarter with Merchant Marine ahead, 17-5.
After the Mariners scored the first two goals of the final quarter, SVU finished the game strong with four-straight, but it wasn't enough, as USMMA cruised on to the 19-9 win.
For Southern Virginia, freshman Ty Veres had a team-high four points on three goals and one assist. Sophomore Shawn Lamb and freshman Tennison Schmidt both had two goals and a helper apiece.
