GALLOWAY N.J. (May 3, 2017) – On Wednesday night, the #3 U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team lost its road Skyline semifinal matchup at #2 Stockton University, 17-11. In defeat, the Mariners close out the season with an 11-4 record – their second straight double-digit win campaign – while the Ospreys improve to 16-2 and will face top-seeded Montclair State on Saturday in the Skyline Finals.
Junior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) led the way offensively for USMMA with five points on two goals and three assists, while two other Mariners recorded four points each – junior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.), who had four goals, and freshman Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) with two tallies and two helpers. Freshman Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) added a hat-trick and classmate Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) and junior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) rounded out the Mariners scorers with an assist apiece.
In goal, senior Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) made nine save in the first half, but suffered the loss. Freshman Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) played the final 30 minutes and finished the night with seven saves.
Senior Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) was 10-for-29 in the faceoff-X with a team-high five groundballs. Classmate Channing Meyer (Norman, Okla.) was second on the squad with three GBs and sophomore Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas) tied for the game-high with two caused turnovers.
Stockton raced out to an 8-1 lead after the first quarter, but the Mariners responded with four straight tallies to make it a three-goal game, 8-5, at 9:26 of the second. After the two teams traded goals, the Ospreys finished the quarter strong and took a 12-6 lead into the halftime break.
The hosts scored first in the third quarter, however Merchant Marine answered with four straight once again to pull back within three, 13-10, at 4:40. Stockton finished the quarter with a goal and then spent most of the fourth down in the USMMA end, outscoring the Mariners, 4-1, in the frame to seal the victory.
The Ospreys were led by junior Zack Aho, who registered a game-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Classmate Mike Caposella added four goals and one helper and four other players had multi-point nights. Sophomore Justin Ruiz made eight saves to record the win between the pipes. Classmate Tyler Bollard was 20-for-30 in faceoffs with a game-high eight groundballs and sophomore Jon Liguori caused two turnovers.
