Men’s Lax Ends Regular Season With 19-5 Road Win At Purchase Friday Night

PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 21, 2017) – For just the second time in program history, the USMMA men's lacrosse team will finish back-to-back seasons with double-digit victories, as the Mariners earned a 19-5 Skyline Conference win over Purchase College on the road Friday night in the 2017 regular season finale. Merchant Marine improves to 10-3 (7-2 Skyline) with the victory, while the Panthers fall to 1-9 (1-7 Skyline).
 
The last time the Mariners had consecutive 10-plus-win seasons was 2006 (12-5) and 2007 (13-4). They finished the 2016 season last year with a 10-4 record.
 
Junior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) led all players on the night with seven points, as he scored three goals and dished out four assists. Freshman Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) contributed five points with a goal and four helpers and classmate Jackson Misner (Tampa, Fla.) added two goals and one assist.
 
Freshman Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) recorded his fourth straight hat trick, while seniors Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Cameron Hallier (Houston, Texas) both found the back of the net twice. Three other Mariners picked up a goal and an assist on the night – senior Dan McGovern (Baltimore, Md.) and juniors Ryan Sweeney (San Diego, Calif.) and Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.). Freshman Nick Maurer (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored once for the Mariners and senior Channing Meyer (Norman, Okla.) had one assist.
 
Whitenack won 10-of-11 faceoffs and picked up a team-high nine groundballs. Hallier and Meyers both recorded four GBs apiece and Maurer tied for the game-high with two caused turnovers.
 
In goal, senior Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) made six saves in the opening half en route to his seventh victory of the season. Freshman Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) played the entire second half and stopped three Panther shots.
 
Purchase was led by sophomore James Felix, who scored twice, and junior Dylan Gethicker, who added a goal and an assist. Senior Simon Lai and freshman Daniel Desaulniers both contributed one goal apiece. Gethicker won 8-of-18 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 14 groundballs, while also tying for the game-best with two caused turnovers.
 
The Mariners are now locked in as the #3 seed and will host the #6 seed in the first round of the Skyline Tournament. They will await the end of the regular season early next week to find out who will claim the #6 seed. The first round matchup is scheduled for next Saturday, April 29, at Brooks Stadium.
