Stockton Uses Strong Fourth Quarter To Power Past Mariners, 14-12

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 12, 2017) – On Wednesday night, the USMMA men's lacrosse team lost its home Skyline Conference matchup at Brooks Stadium to visiting Stockton University, 14-12. The defeat drops the Mariners to 7-3 (5-2 Skyline), while the Ospreys improve to 13-2 (6-1 Skyline) with the victory.
 
Merchant Marine held a lead for a majority of the game until late in the fourth quarter. The Mariners' highest advantage game came in the third quarter when they had three-goal leads of 8-5 and 9-6. However, Stockton outscored USMMA, 8-3 in the final quarter, including a stretch where the Ospreys scored three in a row to take their first lead since very early in the opening quarter, 11-10, with 5:17 to play.
 
After the Mariners tied it up at 11-11, the visitors again scored three straight to secure a firmer grip on the game with just under two minutes to play. The Mariners tallied one more time, but couldn't muster the two more needed, and they now move into third place in the Skyline standings, while the Ospreys are now alone in second.
 
Junior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) led all players in the game by tallying five points, as he was one of two Mariners with a hat trick and he also dished out two assists. Freshman Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) also scored three times. Junior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) added two goals and two helpers and sophomore Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) found the back of the net twice.
 
Freshman Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) contributed one tally and two assists to the offense, while junior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal and an assist. Senior goalie Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) rounded out the USMMA point-getters with a beautiful assist on a third-quarter goal by Treon. Ossing also made 13 saves in the losing effort.
 
Senior Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) won 11-of-29 faceoffs on the night and picked up a team-best six groundballs. Sophomore Lane Schmidt (North East, Md.) scooped up five GBs and four other Mariners had three, including freshman defender Nick Vinberg (Massapequa Park, N.Y.). Seven different players recorded one caused turnover apiece for Merchant Marine.
 
The Ospreys were led by sophomore Colin Shea, who scored four times – all in the fourth quarter – and dished out one assist. Classmate Brandon Nunez contributed a hat trick and six other Stockton player scored on the night, including junior Zack Aho, who did so twice. Sophomore Tyler Bollard won 18-of-29 faceoffs and led all players in the game with eight groundballs and classmate Justin Ruiz earned the victory in the cage, as he stopped 15 Mariner shots.
 
Up next, the Mariners will travel down to Annapolis, Md., this weekend for a rivalry matchup against Coast Guard that will be played at the U.S. Naval Academy after the Army-Navy game this Saturday, April 15. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Navy's Jack Stephens Field at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
