FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (April 8, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team picked up an 18-13 road victory at Skyline Conference opponent Farmingdale State on Saturday for the Mariners' fourth-straight win. USMMA improves to 7-2 (5-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Rams fall to 9-4 (3-3 Skyline) in defeat.
Six different players scored for the Mariners and five of them found the back of the net at least three times. Sophomore Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) tied for the game-high with four tallies, while senior Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) and juniors Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) and Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) all had three goals apiece. Freshman Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) contributed two goals to the victory as well.
Treon added three assists to lead all players in the game with six points. Coll and freshman Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) both dished out two helpers each, while Whitenack, Dodson and junior Max Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.) all recorded one assist throughout the day.
The Mariners won 29 of the 34 faceoffs on the day, with Whitenack taking all of them. He picked up a career-high 23 groundballs – almost half of the Mariners' 53 GBs on the day, as they controlled the loose balls with a 53-29 advantage. Treon added nine groundballs to go along with a team-high two caused turnovers.
In goal, senior Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) got the start and made seven saves in just over 51 minutes of action to record the victory. Freshman Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) played about nine minutes to start the third and had one save.
The Mariners held a 4-3 lead after the first quarter and built it up to a 9-6 advantage by halftime. The Rams tied the score up at 9-9 with three-straight early in the third, but Merchant Marine responded with three in a row of their own to go up 12-9.
FSC fought back to within one with two late goals in the third, but the Mariners used a strong opening nine minutes of the fourth to take a commanding 16-11 lead. After a back-to-back scare by the Rams, USMMA added two more goals late to secure the victory.
Farmingdale was led by senior Mike Curry, who scored four times and added one assist. Classmate Tyler Rifice contributed three goals and freshman Ryan Wieczorek and seniors Stephen White and Patrick Cowcer all scored twice. Sophomore Dan Panzarino picked up a team-high eight groundballs and three players tied for the game-best with two caused turnovers. Senior goalie Brendan Schade made 18 saves over the 60 minutes in the losing effort.
