KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 29, 2017) – Behind a career-high five goals by junior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) and a combined 16 saves by senior Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) and freshman Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) in net, the USMMA men's lacrosse team secured a 12-8 home victory over Skyline Conference opponent St. Joseph's of Long Island on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium.

The Mariners move to 4-2 overall (2-1 Skyline) with the win, while the Golden Eagles fall to 3-4 (0-3 Skyline) in defeat.

St. Joe's came out strong to start the game, scoring the first three goals, all in the opening quarter. Merchant Marine didn't get on the board until about three minutes into the second. The Mariners then sprung for a total of five second-quarter goals and the defense and Ossing shut down the SJC offense, allowing the hosts to take a 5-3 lead into the break at halftime.

After the Golden Eagles cut their deficit down to just one, 5-4, with a goal early in the third, Merchant Marine responded with four straight tallies, three from the crosse of Dodson. The visitors tacked on one more before the end of the quarter.

Dodson opened the scoring in the fourth with his fifth of the night. St. Joseph's then took advantage of a couple USMMA penalties and scored two man-up goals to make the score 10-7. Tilley came up big down the stretch, as he had seven saves in the fourth to help preserve the win. The Mariners added two more insurance goals in the final five minutes and the Eagles scored the last goal of the night with just over two minutes to play.

Both senior Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) and junior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) added three points each to the victory with two goals and one assist apiece, while freshman Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) reversed that with one tally and two helpers. Junior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and sophomore Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) also found the back of the net for the Mariners in the victory, with Renard, senior Dan McGovern (Baltimore, Md.), sophomore Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.) and freshman Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) all had one assist apiece.

Whitenack was 11-for-24 from the faceoff-X and led Merchant Marine with five groundballs. Sophomore Lane Schmidt (North East, Md.) contributed four GBs, while senior defender Patrick Keyes (Parsippany, N.J.) and freshman Nick Vinberg (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) both had a team-best two caused turnovers on the night.

In goal, Ossing earned the victory after playing the first 30 minutes and making six saves, while Tilley ended the night with 10 stops.

For St. Joseph's, junior Casey Hickey led the way with five points on three goals and two assists. Senior Scott Reece also had a hat-trick for the Golden Eagles, while classmate Josh Shaw added one tally and two helpers. Freshman goalie Andrew Yoli suffered the loss, despite making 12 saves over the 60 minutes.

The Mariners return to action this Saturday, April 1, when they travel to Skyline and industry rival SUNY Maritime College for the annual Capt. John Hagedorn Cup game. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Privateers' Reinhart Field. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
