PURCHASE, N.Y. (March 22, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team won its non-conference contest up at Manhattanville College, 13-8, on Wednesday night at M'Ville's GoValiants.com Field. The Mariners improve to 3-1 on the season with the victory, while the Valiants fall to 2-2 in defeat.
Junior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) led all players in the game with five points, as he scored three times and dished out two assists. Sophomore Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) found the back of the net a game-high four times, while classmate Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) tallied a tallied a hat trick with three goals.
Junior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) contributed four points on the night with a goal and three assists. Freshman Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) added one goal and one helper and junior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) rounded out the Mariner scorers with one goal.
Senior Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, N.Y.) was 19-for-22 from the faceoff X and picked up a game-high 15 groundballs. In goal, senior Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) earned the victory after playing the first half and making four saves. He gave way to freshman Zac Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.), who was between the pipes for the entire second half and also made four saves to preserve the win.
Manhattanville opened the scoring just nine seconds into action, but the Mariners responded with four of the next five goals over the next five minutes. The Valiants added a late goal to bring the score to 4-3 in favor of USMMA at the end of the first.
After Roros put Merchant Marine up 5-3 in the opening minute of the second, M'Ville scored three-straight to take a 6-5 lead. The Mariners answered with three-consecutive tallies of their own to go up, 8-6. The Valiants scored with just four seconds remaining in the half and Merchant Marine took an 8-7 lead into the halftime break.
The Mariners dominated action in the third quarter, as they scored five of the six goals in the frame. Neither team found the back of the net in the final quarter, and USMMA sailed on to the 13-8 victory.
The Valiants were led by senior Colin Morrissey, who scored three times and had one assist on the night. Freshman Will Duval added two goals and three other players scored one goal each. Senior goalie Zach Hoffman made 13 saves in the losing effort and led Manhattanville with three groundballs.
The Mariners return to action this Saturday, March 25, when they host Skyline Conference opponent Montclair State at 12-noon at Brooks Stadium. Prior to the opening faceoff, the USMMA men's lacrosse program will pay tribute to its seven graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony.
