Mariners Hold Off Southern Virginia In Season-Opener, 17-15

BUENA VISTA, Va. (March 8, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team opened the 2017 season with an exciting 17-15 victory over Southern Virginia on the road Wednesday afternoon. The Mariners never trailed in the game, but the Knights were always close on their tails throughout.
 
Junior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) registered nine points to lead all players on the day, as he found the back of the net five times and dished out four assists. Classmate Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) also had five goals on the day and fellow junior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) recorded four points on two goals and two assists.
 
Freshmen Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) and Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) had impressive debuts for USMMA, as Roros picked up a hat trick with three goals and Connors chipped in with two tallies. Senior Dan McGovern (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Max Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.) led the Mariners with six groundballs each, while Roros and McGovern both registered a team-high two caused turnovers and McGovern and sophomore Jeb Brown (Westport, Mass.) both had a team-best eight faceoff wins.
 
Freshman goalie Zach Tilley (Carolina Beach, N.C.) came into the game at the beginning of the second half with the score tied at 8-8 and recorded the victory after finishing out the contest. Senior Dave Ossing (Catonsville, Md.) got the start between the pipes and played the first 30 minutes, making five saves.
 
For Southern Virginia, junior Casey Rich and freshman Shawn Lamb both had a game-high six goals, with Rich also picking up an assist. Sophomore Spencer Tunick scored twice for the Knights, while senior Ryan Larsen found the back of the net once. Freshman goalie Garrison Cook took the loss after playing the first three quarters.
 
Up next, Merchant Marine will travel to Madison, N.J., this Saturday, March 11, to take on FDU-Florham. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 12-noon at the Devils' Robert T. Shields Field. Live stats will be available for the non-conference tilt by following this link.
