Tom Gill Earns IMLCA Lifetime Service Award

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 23, 2016) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy 27th-year head men's lacrosse coach Tom Gill was named as this year's recipient of the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Lifetime Service Award, the IMLCA announced at its national convention earlier this month down in Baltimore.

The IMLAC Lifetime Service Award honors those people in the coaching profession who have contributed to the overall growth and development of the sport of men's lacrosse in the United States. Previous winners include US Lacrosse Hall of Fame coaches Bob Scott (Johns Hopkins) and Jack Emmer (Army) as well as Tony Seaman (Penn/Hopkins/Towson) and Tom Hayes (Rutgers).

Gill has been the head coach of the Mariners since the 1991 season and has compiled a record of 190-180 over the past 26 season at Kings Point. He holds an overall record of 235-213 in NCAA Division III and his 235 wins ranks him 14th all-time among D-III men's lacrosse coaches. This past 2016 season, he guided USMMA to its fourth-ever 10-plus win season, as the Mariners finished the campaign with a 10-4 record.

Outside of the Academy, Gill has made significant strides to contribute to the growth and development of men's lacrosse. He has served on the board of the NCAA Division III Lacrosse Championship, All-America Selection Committee and Regional Advisory Committee. He has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Rules Committee and the ECAC Board of the USILA.

Gill has also been heavily involved with the game at the international level as a coach and a player. He served as an assistant coach for the Irish National Team that competed at the World Championships in Perth, Australia. He played professionally for the New York Saints, served as an alternate in the 1982 World Games and was selected to compete as a member of Team USA in 1994, 1996 and 2001. Furthermore, Gill coached numerous clinics in Argentina, Australia, and Ireland.
