Men’s Lacrosse To Face Coast Guard In Annapolis In April After Army-Navy Game

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 29, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse program is happy to announce that its annual Superintendents' Trophy game against arch-rival Coast Guard will be played in Annapolis, Md., this upcoming 2017 season. The contest will take place after the Army-Navy game at the Midshipmen's Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Saturday, April 15.

"We are excited to be part of an annual game with the Coast Guard Academy at the same site as Army/Navy," commented 27th-year USMMA Head Coach Tom Gill. "It brings great recognition to both of our lesser known Service Academies and their importance to the country! Our players and coaches are excited about this opportunity."

The men's lacrosse rivalry is relatively new between the Mariners and the Bears, as Coast Guard's squad just elevated to NCAA from club prior to the 2015 season. USMMA has come out on top of the two meetings between the schools – 19-9 at home in 2015 and 16-13 up in New London, Conn., in 2016.

"This will be a great experience for our student-athletes and coaches," added USMMA Athletic Director Mo White. "To bring our own rivalry game with Coast Guard to the field after arguably the best rivalry in college athletics will be very memorable for all involved. It will also be great for the two Academies to play so close to Washington, D.C., where the headquarters of the Departments of Transportation and Homeland Security are."

The two schools are bitter rivals in every NCAA sport they share in common and battle each year for the Superintendents' Trophy. The trophy is bestowed by either the Secretary of Homeland Security, who oversees the Coast Guard Academy, or the Secretary of Transportation, who oversees the Merchant Marine Academy, and creates a friendly rivalry in Washington, D.C. between the two secretaries.
