WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 23, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team defeated Landmark Conference opponent Catholic, 14-13, in double overtime on Saturday down in the Nation's Capital. The win improves the Mariners' record to 10-3 (3-2 Landmark), while CUA falls to 8-6 (2-3 Landmark) in defeat.
Sophomore Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) netted the game-winner just 32 seconds into the second extra frame. It was his game-high eighth goal of the contest and 56th of the year. Senior goalie Kevin Young (Springfield, Va.) came up clutch in the first overtime period, as he made four saves over the four minutes to count towards his game-total of 20.
The Mariners were trailing by two, 11-9, with 10:47 left in the fourth quarter before they rattled off four straight goals – a man-up tally by freshman Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.), his second of the game, followed by three straight by Coll (the first two assisted by sophomore Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.)) – to go ahead 13-11 with just 1:04 to play.
The Cardinals scored twice in the final minute, however, including the game-tying goal by junior Jack Murphy with just two seconds left in regulation.
Catholic controlled most of the action in the first overtime, out-shooting the Mariners, 5-1, but neither team could find the back of the net, despite Catholic's best efforts with three shots in the final 15 seconds (two of which were saved by Young, while the other sailed high of the cage).
Freshman Charlie Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) won the opening faceoff of the second OT as junior Dan McGovern (Baltimore, Md.) picked up the loose ball. The ball eventually found its way to Coll, who buried the winner with 3:28 on the clock.
Treon finished the day with a goal and four assists, while fellow starting attackman, freshman Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.), tallied three goals and one assist. Sophomore Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) contributed to the offense with an assist on Rodriguez's first goal in the third quarter.
Hughes was 12-for-26 from the faceoff-X with a team-high five groundballs. Senior Gus Sawicki (Louisville, Colo.) and sophomore Chris Giordano (Warwick, N.Y.) both recorded a game-high two caused turnovers to lead the Mariner defense, with Sawicki picking up four GBs and Giordano adding two GBs.
For Catholic, junior Tim Keith led the way by scoring five goals while also dishing out one assist. Classmate Victor Licata found the back of the net three times and sophomore Bennett Bradley recorded two goals and two assists. Sophomore Matt Michalski was 16-for-29 in faceoffs with a game-high 11 groundballs. Senior goalie Harrison Holak suffered the loss despite making 10 saves on the afternoon
Up next, the Mariners will close out the regular season next Saturday, April 30, with a home Landmark game against Susquehanna beginning at 12-noon.
