SCRANTON, Pa. (April 16, 2016) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team lost its Landmark Conference game on Saturday afternoon at the University of Scranton by the final score of 20-5. The Mariners fall to 9-3 (2-2 Landmark) on the season, while the Royals improve to 11-3 (3-1 Landmark).
Freshman Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) recorded a team-high four points on two goals and two assists. Sophomore Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) also found the back of the net twice on the afternoon while also scooping up five groundballs, and junior Dan McGovern (Baltimore, Md.) scored the Mariners' only other goal.
Senior Eric Kennedy (Massapequa, N.Y.) led Merchant Marine with six groundballs and sophomore defender Chris Giordano (Warwick, N.Y.) caused a team-best two turnovers. In goal, sophomore JC Phillips (Lake Mohawk, N.J.) made 11 saves in the losing effort.
Six players recorded multi-point performances for Scranton, led by senior Nicholas Swift, who scored four times while dishing out two assists. Freshman Matt Haemmerle and senior Alec Mikrut both had four points, as Haemmerle recorded three goals with one assist and Mikrut found the back of the net twice to go along with two assists.
Sophomore Adam Drury was 20-for-24 from the faceoff-X in the affair, while classmate Conor Carey picked up a game-high 11 groundballs. Senior goalie Nicholas McKaba earned the victory with two saves in just over 32 minutes of action. In over 22 minutes of relief, sophomore Jeff Sabatini made two saves and freshman Zach Rich closed out the final five-plus minutes, making one save.
Up next, the Mariners will travel down to Washington, D.C., next Saturday, April 23, to take on Landmark Conference opponent Catholic.
