KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 12, 2016) – The Landmark Conference on Monday announced that two members of the USMMA men's lacrosse team were named the league's Athletes of the Week. Sophomore attacker Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) took home offensive honors, while senior goalie Kevin Young (Springfield, Va.) earned the accolade on the defensive side.
Then on Tuesday, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its Players of the Week and Coll took Division III Metro/Upstate Offensive honors, while fellow attackman freshman Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) was named the DIII Metro/Upstate Rookie of the Week.
For Coll, these are the first Landmark and ECAC Offensive Athlete of the Week selections of his career. He paced the Mariners with 18 points over their two victories last week. On Wednesday against local rival SUNY Maritime, he led all players with eight goals and also dished out one assist in the Mariners' 18-12 victory. On Saturday against Landmark opponent Drew, Coll scored six times and added three assists to USMMA's 12-6 win over the Rangers. He also recorded six groundballs and two caused turnovers over the two games.
Coll currently ranks second in the nation in goals per game (4.55) and man-up goals (10), while his 5.64 points per game is good for eighth in the country. For the complete ranking summary for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy among all Division III men's lacrosse programs, click here.
This is Young's second Landmark Defensive Athlete of the Week honor of the season, as he also earned the accolade back on March 28. The senior went a perfect 2-0 between the pipes for the Mariners to improve his record to 9-2 on the season. He stopped 12 shots in the home non-conference win over local rival SUNY Maritime College on Wednesday and followed that up with a 13-save performance on Saturday in the home Landmark win over Drew.
Renard earns ECAC Rookie of the Week accolades after recording 12 points in a 2-0 week for the Mariners, tallying seven goals and five assists. The freshmen led all players with 10 points in the Mariners' 18-12 home win over non-conference rival SUNY Maritime on Wednesday night, finding the back of the net five times while dishing out five assists. Renard followed that up with a two-goal performance to help Merchant Marine defeat visiting Drew University in Landmark Conference action on Saturday, 12-6.
The Mariners return to action this Saturday, April 16, when they travel to Pennsylvania to take on Scranton in a key Landmark Conference showdown. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Royals' Fitzpatrick Field. Live stats are available for the contest by following this link.
