DANBURY, Conn. (March 29, 2016) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team sailed past Western Connecticut State, 14-7, on Tuesday evening in a non-conference matchup at the Colonials' Western Athletic Complex. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 7-1 on the season, while WestConn falls to 1-5 in defeat.

Freshman Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) added three goals with two assists and classmate Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) also found the back of the net once with three assists on the night. The Mariners nearly shut out WestConn in the first quarter, scoring four times over the opening 13-plus minutes, including a man-up goal, but the Colonials got on the board with just one second remaining in the frame. Merchant Marine answered with quick goals just over a minute into the second, and then scored their third of the period at 12:41 to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Western Connecticut added two more tallies before the half and USMMA led 7-3 at the halftime break.
The third quarter started much like the first, as the Mariners scored the first four goals to go up 11-3, but WestConn responded with three of the next four goals, including the first of the fourth quarter. Coll scored the final two Merchant Marine goals in the fourth to close out their scoring and the Colonials added a late goal to end the night.
Western Connecticut State was led by senior Nate Wilson, who scored three times and added two assists. Sophomore Richard Pitman, senior Jesse Beatty, freshman Robby Swensen and senior Michael Garrett also found the back of the net for the Colonials. In the cage, junior Patrick Tynan made 21 saves in the losing effort.
Up next, the Mariners travel to Elizabethtown, Pa., this Saturday, April 2, for a Landmark Conference contest at Elizabethtown College.
