Young’s 17-Save Performance Backstops Mariners To 15-5 Win Over Goucher

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 26, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team triumphed over visiting Goucher College, 15-5, on Saturday at Brooks Stadium in the Mariners' Landmark Conference opener. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 6-1 (1-0 Landmark) on the season, while the Gophers fall to 7-3 (0-2 Landmark) in defeat.

Senior goalie Kevin Young (Springfield, Va.) recorded 17 saves on the day to earn the victory between the pipes. It was his most saves in a game since he had 23 against Goucher during his freshman year back in 2013.

The trio of Mariner starting attackers led the way on the scoresheet once again, as sophomore Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) had three goals with two assists, freshman Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) also found the back of the net three times with one assist and sophomore Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) picked up his fifth-straight hat trick with three tallies. Coll has recorded at least three goals in six of the seven games so far this season.

Senior Michael Atkinson (Virginia Beach, Va.) and freshman Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) both added two goals apiece, while senior Rob Tirrito (Centerport, N.Y.) and freshman Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.) each scored once. Four Mariners dished out one assist each – senior Eric Kennedy (Massapequa, N.Y.), junior Dan McGovern (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomores Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas) and Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.).

Mullins led all players in the game with nine groundballs, while Kennedy and freshman Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) both picked up four GBs apiece. Hughes was dominant from the face-off X, as he was 16-of-22 draws in the affair. Coll, Mullins, senior Gus Sawicki (Louisville, Colo.) and freshman Lane Schmidt (North East, Md.) all caused one turnover.

The Mariners got on the board first when Tiritto tallied his third of the year just over five minutes in. Rodriguez doubled the home lead with his ninth of the season with 3:12 remaining, but the Gophers responded with just 12 ticks to go in the opening quarter.

Merchant Marine began to distance itself in the second quarter – outscoring Goucher, 5-2, in the frame, including four-straight from 11:12 to 8:20 on two man-up goals by Coll, one from Treon and one from Renard. Another late tally by the Gophers made the score 7-3, where it remained into the halftime break.

In the third, USMMA scored the first three goals in just over five minutes of play, as Rodriguez got his 10th of the year, Treon added his 11th and Atkinson scored the first of his two in the game. Goucher strung together two goals for the first time all game to close out the scoring in the period. The Mariners dominated the fourth quarter, burying five goals to seal the victory – Kane scored his fifth of the season, Atkinson added his fourth, Coll his 28th and Renard his 22nd and 23rd.

The Gophers were led by senior Michael Morgan, who scored twice, while classmate Owen Demmerly had one goal and one assist. Senior Conner Annunziato and junior Nate Wilinski also found the back of the net for the visitors. Senior Andrew Foster and freshman Jeremy Buckler both had a team-high three groundballs, apiece, and Foster led all players in the game with two caused turnovers. In the cage, sophomore Matt Messerle made 11 saves in the losing effort.

Up next, the Mariners travel to Danbury, Conn., this Tuesday, March 29, for a non-conference tilt at Western Connecticut State University.
