KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 23, 2016) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team defeated visiting non-conference opponent Manhattanville College on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium by the final score of 19-9. With the win, the Mariners improve to 5-1 on the season – the program's best start in over 20 years. Manhattanville's record falls to an even 3-3 in defeat.
Six different Mariners recorded multi-point games, led by freshman Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.), who tallied a game-high six points on five goals and one assist. Sophomore Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) registered four points on three goals and one helper, while classmate Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) and freshman Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) both contributed three points, apiece. Rodriguez notched his first career hat-trick and Treon added two goals and one assist.
Junior Cameron Hallier (Houston, Texas) found the back of the net twice and freshman Matt Kane (Lewes, Del.) had one goal and one assist to round out the Merchant Marine players with multiple points on the night.
Freshman face-off man Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) went 20-for-31 from the X and picked up a game-high 11 groundballs. Sophomore Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas) scooped up five groundballs and also added one assist, while senior defender Gus Sawicki (Louisville, Colo.) led all players on the night with three caused turnovers.
In net, senior Kevin Young (Springfield, Va.) earned his fifth win of the season after making three saves over three quarters of action. Sophomore JC Phillips (Lake Mohawk, N.J.) replaced Young at the beginning of the fourth quarter and made five stops.
USMMA jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the opening 10 minutes of the game before the Valiants got on the board late in the first quarter on a man-up goal. The Mariners pulled away in the second quarter after out-scoring Manhattanville, 9-3, in the frame to take a 14-4 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Merchant Marine scored the first two goals in the third and then the visitors tried to rally with a late goal in the quarter and then the next four to start the fourth, but the Mariners buried three more before time ran out.
Seniors John Wesley (Bellaire, Texas), Rob Tirrito (Centerport, N.Y.) and Ethan Medler (Kingwood, Texas) also found the back of the net for USMMA in the affair, while classmate Stephen Magretti (Tappan, N.Y.) dished out an assist.
For Manhattanville, sophomore Tyler Bentrewicz led the way with a goal and four assists, while junior Colin Morrissey scored four goals. Junior goalie Zach Hoffman suffered the loss despite making 10 saves on the night.
Up next, Merchant Marine opens Landmark Conference action with a home game against Goucher College this Saturday, March 26. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Brooks Stadium and live stats and a live video feed of the game are available by following those links.
