KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 17, 2016) – On Thursday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team defeated the College of Mount St. Vincent, 21-6, at Brooks Stadium, for its third-straight victory. With the win, the Mariners improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Dolphins fall to 1-5.
Sophomore Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) recorded 10 points to lead all players in the game. He had three goals and dished out seven assists. Classmate Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and freshman Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) both registered six points each. Coll scored four goals and added two assists, while Renard found the back of the net three times to go along with three assists.
Sophomore Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) had three goals and an assist, while seniors Ethan Medler (Kingwood, Texas) and Michael Atkinson (Virginia Beach, Va.) had two goals each. Four other Mariners scored on the evening.
Freshman Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) was 17-for-19 on faceoffs and tied for the game-high of seven groundballs with sophomore Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas). Sophomore Chris Giordano (Warwick, N.Y.) led the Mariner defense with two caused turnovers.
In goal, senior Kevin Young (Springfield, Va.) earned the victory after recording one save in the opening half. He was replaced by sophomore JC Phillips (Lake Mohawk, N.J.) for the second half, and Phillips secured the victory with one more save.
The Mariners scored the first three goals of the game in the opening four minutes. Mount St. Vincent responded with three goals of their own over the next eight minutes to tie the score up at 3-3 at 3:06 of the opening quarter. The second quarter proved to be the difference in the game, as Merchant Marine outscored the Dolphins, 11-1, in the period to take a commanding 14-4 lead into the halftime break.
USMMA added four of the five goals in the third and then three of the four in the fourth to cruise to the victory.
The Dolphins were led by senior Germain Ngaba, who had a hat trick on the night. Three other CMSV players found the back of the net. Senior goalie Ben Gashi suffered the loss after stopping nine Mariner shots in over 40 minutes of action.
Merchant Marine will be back in action next Wednesday, March 23, when the Mariners host Manhattanville College. The contest will start at 7 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available by following those links.
