KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 16, 2016) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Concordia Wisconsin, 9-5, on Wednesday evening in the Mariners' 2016 home-opener at Brooks Stadium. The win improves Merchant Marine to 3-1 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 4-2.

The start of the game was delayed nearly 45 minutes due to inclement weather, which included lightning.

Once action got underway, the Falcons jumped on the scoreboard first with a tally just over a minute in. Sophomore Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) buried two straight over the next five minutes to give USMMA its first lead of the night at 8:10. Concordia tied the score up at 2-2 at 5:34, but freshman Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) put the Mariners ahead again two-and-a-half minutes later.

Both teams scored with under a minute to play in the opening quarter, as the Falcons tied it up at 3-3 with 50 seconds remaining, but freshman Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) found the back of the net with just five ticks left to give Merchant Marine a lead it wouldn't relinquish the rest of the night.

There was only one goal scored in a quiet second quarter, as Renard cashed in on his second of the night off of sophomore Nick Treon's (Danville, Pa.) second assist of the evening.

Both goalies – USMMA senior Kevin Young (Springfield, Va.) and Concordia freshman Garrett Wohlford – recorded eight saves in the opening half.

The next goal didn't come until just over seven minutes into the third quarter, as Coll notched his third of the affair, his second man-up goal of the night, off a dish by Treon. The Falcons responded late in the quarter to cut the score to 6-4, but Coll scored his fourth of the game, assisted by sophomore Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) with just 38 seconds left in the third.

In the fourth, it took over nine minutes before junior Dan McGovern (Baltimore, Md.) tallied his first goal of the season off of Treon's fourth assist of the night to make it 8-4 with 5:26 remaining. Concordia tried to inch back, but only scored once more, at 2:33, but it was quickly answered by Rodriguez's second of the game that ended the scoring on the night.

Coll and Treon both had four points each, as Coll now moves to a team-leading 17 goals on the season, while Treon now sits at a team-best 11 assist. Coll also caused two turnovers on the night and freshman face-off man Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) was 11-for-18 from the X with a team-high five groundballs. Young finished the night with 12 saves for his second straight victory and third of the season.

The Falcons had five different goal-scorers on the evening and senior Matt Garvey led the way with three points on a goal and two assists. Junior Colin Raley also recorded a multi-point game with one tally and one helper. Wohlford stopped 12 Mariner shots and led all players in the game with six groundballs in the losing effort.

USMMA is right back at it tomorrow night, Thursday, March 17, for a home St. Patrick's Day affair with the College of Mount St. Vincent. Opening faceoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game are available by following those links.
