MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 9, 2016) – The USMMA men's lacrosse team lost a neutral-site game against Alfred University, 15-6, on Wednesday in the Mariners' first game of their Spring Break trip down in South Carolina. The loss drops Merchant Marine's record to 1-1 overall, while the Saxons improve to 3-1.

Freshman Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) had a team-high five points for the Mariners on three goals and two assists. It was the rookie's second-consecutive hat trick in as many collegiate games and he now leads the squad with 11 points on the season. Sophomore Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) added two goals to bring his season-total to a team-best nine tallies.

Freshman Michael Rodriguez (Coronado, Calif.) also found the back of the net, while sophomore Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) had one assist on the afternoon.

Sophomore Zachary Mullins (Houston, Texas) and senior goalie Kevin Young (Springfield, Va.) both picked up a team-high nine groundballs each, while senior defenders John Wesely (Bellaire, Texas) and Gus Sawicki (Louisville, Colo.) led the squad with two caused turnovers apiece. Young finished the game with 14 saves.

The Mariners jumped on the board first with a goal by Renard, assisted by Treon, just under two minutes into the game. Alfred tied the score up at 7:31 of the first and went on to tally eight unanswered goals over the next 14 minutes to take a commanding 8-1 lead with 8:36 left to play in the half. Merchant Marine scored twice more before the half was over, both man-up tallies by Rodriguez and Coll, that sandwiched a goal by the Saxons and Alfred led, 9-3, at halftime.

The Saxons found the back of the net six-consecutive times over the next 20 minutes before the Mariners ended the scoring on the day with the last three goals – the first by Coll and the last two by Renard.

Alfred sophomore Jake Lynch led all players in the game with six points on four goals and two assists, while freshman Joe Fornataro also had four goals. Sophomore goalie Drew Gardner had 12 saves over nearly 53 minutes to earn the victory between the pipes for the Saxons.

The Mariners return to action this Friday, March 11, when they take on Emmanuel College in the final game of the Spring Break trip. Game time against the Saints is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Carolina Forest High School.
