Kings Point, NY – Junior Troy Smith (Deer Park, TX) struck for a season high six goals to lead the USMMA men's lacrosse team in a 17-2 blowout victory over Maritime (NY) Monday night. Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) made nine saves and surrendered just two goals for his sixth win of the year. Gus Sawicki (Louisville, CO) paced the Mariners defense, causing four turnovers and recording four ground balls.
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (6-4) opened the scoring as Smith found the back of the net for the first time 1:42 into the game. Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) followed with his first marker of the night at the 11:44 mark. Robert Tirrito (Centerport, NY) and Smith tallied back-to-back goals to give the Mariners a 4-0 advantage after the opening period.
Maritime (NY) (4-9) posted two straight goals, both from a long-stick player, to cut into the USMMA deficit. James D'Amico and Jonathan Strezenec were responsible for the markers as the Privateers made it 4-2. However, the Mariners closed the first half red-hot, scoring four times in the final 2:26. Dan McGovern (Baltimore, MD) pushed the edge to 5-2 while back-to-back goals from Phil Walker (Falmouth, MA) drove the score line to 7-2. Smith capped the first half with a goal, assisted by Ray Waters (Sayville, NY), with five seconds remaining as USMMA took an 8-2 cushion into halftime.
The Mariners pulled away in the third quarter, scoring seven unanswered goals to open up a comfortable 15-2 margin. Smith racked up a hat trick in the third quarter while Waters, Ethan Medler (Kingwood, TX), Walker, and Tirrito all chipped in one marker. Harty and Cameron Hallier (Houston, TX) rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter as USMMA sealed the 17-2 verdict.
The Mariners return to the field Saturday afternoon for a Landmark Conference clash at Scranton.
