Kings Point, NY - Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) supplied two goals and three assists for five points while Phil Walker (Falmouth, MA) tallied four goals Wednesday as the USMMA men's lacrosse team defeated Manhattanville, 15-3, at Brooks Stadium. Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) shutout the Valiants in the first half, making three saves between the pipes, and Kevin Young (Springfield, VA) recorded seven saves in the second half. Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, NY) was 11-of-12 on face-offs and scooped up a game high 13 ground balls.
Merchant Marine (3-3) scored four times in 2:37 of action late in the first quarter as Ray Waters (Sayville, NY), Walker, Harty, and Robert Tirrito (Centerport, NY) all found the back of the net. USMMA exploded for eight goals in the second stanza and held a commanding 12-0 advantage heading into halfime. Brett Crawford (Arnold, MD) notched three markers while Ian Motley (Ossining, NY) scored his first goal of the year in the Mariners' victory.
Manhattanville (0-9) got on the board with 46 seconds left in the third quarter on the strength of an Andrew Murray unassisted goal. Ian Reill finished the night with seven saves for the Valiants as USMMA fired 54 total shots, including 22 on goal. The Merchant Marine defense forced the visitors into 19 total turnovers as Alex Cline (Draper, UT) led the way with three caused turnovers along with a pair of ground balls.
The USMMA men's lacrosse team returns to action Saturday at 11:00 AM for a Landmark Conference game against Susquehanna at Brooks Stadium.
