Washington, DC - The USMMA men's lacorsse team dropped a 19-7 decision Saturday afternoon at Catholic in a Landmark Conference clash. Phil Walker (Falmouth, MA) and Troy Smith (Deer Park, TX) each had two goals to anchor the Mariners offense. The Cardinals outscored USMMA 11-3 in the second and got four goals and two assists for six total points from Walter Hickey.
Merchant Marine (2-3, 1-1 Landmark) got on the board first as Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) found the back of the net with an assist from Robert Tirrito (Centerport, NY). Tirrito would finish the afternoon with a team high three assists. The CUA netminder, Harrison Holak, came up with seven of his 13 total saves in the first quarter as the home team scored with one second remaining to take a 4-3 advantage into the second quarter.
Catholic (5-4, 1-1 Landmark) dominated the middle stanzas, outscoring the Mariners, 8-1, over the second ad third quarters. The Cardinals were 20-of-23 on clear attempts while limiting USMMA to 11-of-18 and forcing 23 total turnovers.
The Mariners were dominant on the face-off "X", winning 21-of-29 draws. Chris Whitenack (East Meadow, NY) led the charge with an individual mark of 18-of-23 on face-offs as well as 15 ground balls. Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) made 12 saves between the pipes in 42:25 of action.
The USMMA men's lacrosse team returns to action Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium for a non-conference contest against Manhattanville.
