Hoboken, NJ - The USMMA men's lacrosse team suffered a 21-4 setback at the hands of #13 Stevens Wednesday night in the season opener for both teams. Four different Mariners scored a goal in the first game of the 2014 season while Andrew Scrutchfield tallied six goals in the win for the Ducks. Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) played 45 minutes off the bench and made 14 saves on 27 total shots.
Stevens (1-0) opened the game by scoring eight straight goals, including two on man-up opportunities. Scrutchfield and Matt Ferentini both struck twice in the surge as the Ducks outshot the Mariners 21-6 in the opening quarter. Stevens also held a 40-14 advantage in ground balls at the end of the first half.
Merchant Marine (0-1) got on the board with 24 seconds left in the first quarter as Phil Walker (Falmouth, MA) deposited a shot into the net with an assist from Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL). USMMA also scored the first goal of the second quarter on an unassisted man-up marker from senior Brett Crawford (Arnold, MD). The Ducks would rattle off six straight goals of their own before Robert Tirrito (Centerport, NY) slotted home a Ray Waters (Sayville, NY) pass on another man-up possession.
USMMA trailed 16-3 heading into halftime and opened the second half scoring with a Harty goal as Tirrito earned the assist to make it 16-4. However, Stevens accounted for the final five goals of the game as the Ducks earned a 21-4 decision over the Mariners.
The Ducks dominated the face-off battle and won 22-of-28 draws while also successfully completed 18-of-19 clear attempts. USMMA was 2-of-6 on man-up opportunities but committed 27 total turnovers.
Merchant Marine returns to action Saturday afternoon on the road against Elizabethtown.
