Bryn Athyn, PA – Junior midfielder Phil Walker (East Falmouth, MA) and sophomore attacker Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) combined to tally 14 points in the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (6-6) 18-2 victory over the Bryn Athyn Lions (1-7) Thursday evening in Bryn Athyn, PA.
The victory snaps a three game losing skid for Merchant Marine as they wrap up their non-conference schedule.
The Mariners got on the board early and often, outscoring Bryn Athyn 2-0 in the first quarter and 7-2 in the second to take a 9-2 lead into halftime.
Merchant Marine added eight goals in the third quarter before calling off the dogs in the fourth; cruising to a 16-goal decision.
Making his first-career start in goal for Kings Point, freshman goalkeeper Kevin Young (Springfield, VA) held the Lions off the board in three of the four quarters and stopped eight of the 10 shots on goal to record his first-career victory.
Walker's five goals sets a new personal high-mark for the year, putting him in second place on the team with 15 while Harty's three tallies pads his Landmark Conference lead with a season total of 29.
Sophomore midfielder Ian Motley (Ossining, NY) helped USMMA control play winning five of six faceoffs, while senior midfielder Sam Heard (Boca Raton, FL) and junior defenseman Alex Cline (Draper, UT) caused three turnovers apiece.
The Mariners fired a total of 50 shots toward the Bryn Athyn goal, picked up 41 ground balls, and converted an outstanding 27 of 31 clearing attempts.
USMMA, currently clinging to the final spot in the Landmark Conference playoff race, will face off against Drew University, Saturday at 1:00 PM in Kings Point, NY.
Prior to the game, the Mariners will be honoring their seven seniors for their four years of service and dedication to the academy and the lacrosse program.
