Kings Point, NY – The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (5-6, 1-2 LC) dropped a Landmark Conference battle to the Royals of Scranton University (7-3, 3-0 LC) by a score of 11-3, Saturday afternoon in Kings Point, NY.
Although the Mariners got on the board first with a tally by sophomore attacker Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL), Merchant Marine couldn't sustain offensive pressure for the remainder of the contest.
Senior midfielder Joseph Purcell (Mineola, NY) helped create a pair of goals; totaling two helpers by streaking down the middle of the field on fast breaks and dishing the ball to his open teammates to convert for a couple of scores.
Overall, Scranton outshot Merchant Marine 41-25, picked up nearly double the amount of ground balls as the Mariners, 47-25, and came away with 76% of the game's face offs.
In goal for Kings Point, sophomore Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) made a game-high 17 saves on the 27 shots on goal he faced.
Once again, extra-man opportunities seemed to be a problematic area for Merchant Marine as they went 0-7 with the man-advantage, while surrendering three goals down a man themselves.
Although Merchant Marine hung in with Scranton for much of the game, the Royals pulled away in the second half of the contest; outscoring USMMA 7-2 over the final two quarters.
The Mariners finish up their non-conference schedule Thursday April 6 at 4:30 PM in a road matchup with Bryn Athyn.
