Mariners Struggle to Find Offense Against Montclair; Fall 13-5 to Red Hawks
Montclair, NJ – Despite outshooting their adversaries 35-31, the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (5-4) were defeated by the Montclair State University Red Hawks (7-3) by a score of 13-5 Saturday afternoon in Montclair, NJ.
MSU nabbed an early 4-0 lead after one quarter of play and never looked back. Although the Mariners outscored Montclair 3-1 in the second quarter to reduce their deficit to 5-3 heading into halftime, the Red Hawks controlled play for most of the second half, eventually coming away with the 13-5 victory.
Once again Merchant Marine played a disciplined game, not allowing a single goal while down a man while only surrendering one extra-man opportunity. Unfortunately for the Mariners, their inability to capitalize on any of their seven extra-man opportunities severely hurt them throughout the contest.
Mariner's senior midfielder Sean Sheehy (Annapolis, MD) won half of the faceoffs he contested, going 11-for-22, while sophomore goalkeeper Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) made seven saves for Merchant Marine.
USMMA returns to action Wednesday, April 3 when they take on Misericordia at 7:00 PM in Kings Point.
