New York, NY – Led by a season high six points from sophomore midfielder Troy Smith (Deer Park, TX) and an eight goal outburst in the third period, the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (5-3) were able to upend the Valiants of Manhattanville College (0-8) by a score of 17-11 Wednesday night in New York, NY.
The 17 Mariner goals mark their highest scoring output of the season, while their 11 goals given up are the most tallies they've allowed in a winning effort.
Along with Smith's four goals and two assists, sophomore attacker Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) netted six goals of his own, giving him the Landmark Conference lead with a season total of 24.
Senior defenseman Sean Slattery (Massapequa, NY) had solid night in the faceoff circle, winning nine of his 14 tries, and collecting a team-high six ground balls.
The game was tightly contested early on with each team matching each other with a trifecta of goals in the first frame and Manhattanville taking a one goal advantage into halftime with a 7-6 lead.
In the second half, USMMA's more disciplined play ended up making the difference in the contest. Although the Valiants controlled the faceoff circle 21-9 throughout the game, the stingy Mariner defensed caused more than double the amount of turnovers as Manhattanville (14-6).
Merchant Marine was also able to take advantage of a slew of Valiant penalties, scoring six man-up goals on 10 opportunities while only surrendering three man-down goals on six opportunities.
Peppering a total of 54 shots at the Valiant net, and outscoring their opposition 8-1 in the third quarter, Merchant Marine was able to seize the victory from winless Manhattanville.
The Mariners have now won four of their last five contests and will look to continue their hot run as they take on Montclair State Saturday March 30 at 12:00 PM in Montclair, NJ.
