Throggs Neck, NY - The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (2-2) bested their industry rivals SUNY Maritime (2-5) by a 13-3 margin Wednesday night in Throggs Neck, NY.
The sophomore tandem of attacker Geoff Harty (Chicago, IL) and goalkeeper Alex Peyreigne (Weston, CT) held the Privateers in check all night with a pair of stellar performances. Harty led USMMA in scoring, tallying three goals and five assists while Peyreigne stopped 12 of the 15 shots on net to pad his Landmark Conference leading save percentage (65.5%).
The Mariners opened the scoring early on a goal by senior attacker Michael Ackerman (Malvern, PA) in the first three minutes of play. Freshman attacker John Atkinson (Garden City, NY) followed up with another goal just over a minute later to give Kings Point a 2-0 advantage.
Merchant Marine would hold their 2-0 lead through the end of the first quarter and would score the next three, giving the Mariners a 5-0 advantage with 6:06 remaining in the half.
Despite giving up a tally to bring Maritime within four under the five minute mark, the Mariners would finish the second quarter adding two more goals; building a 7-1 halftime lead.
The second half proved to be much of the same as Merchant Marine scored six of the eight remaining markers and didn't relinquish more than a single tally in any given quarter.
Overall, the Mariners had eight different goal scorers and saw 10 different players dent the score sheet. Senior midfielder Sean Sheehy (Annapolis, MD) notched his first goal of the season and freshman attacker Robert Tirrito (Centerport, NY) netted his first career goal with a late-game tally.
The Mariners outshot the Privateers 48-28, had eight less turnovers than Maritime, and converted 25% of their man-up opportunities.
Merchant Marine will open Landmark Conference play Saturday, March 16 when they host the Catholic University Cardinals (3-5, 0-0) at 1:30 PM.
