Mariners Fall At Old Westbury Thursday Night, 77-74

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2019) – On Thursday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team lost its road Skyline Conference game at Old Westbury, 77-74, at the Panthers' Clark Athletic Center. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 8-15 (6-13 Skyline), while OW improves to 14-10 (12-7 Skyline) with the win. 

Sophomore James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) scored a team-high 22 points thanks in part to four three-pointers. Freshman Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) registered a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while classmate Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) added 16 points. Senior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) nearly had a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points. 

The Mariners led nearly the entire first half, building up an advantage as high as eight points three separate times. They took a 43-36 lead into the halftime break. 

USMMA scored the first four points of the second half to grab its largest lead of the night, 11 points, 47-36, at 18:42. They had another 11-point lead at 13:18, 56-45, and later led by 10, 65-55, at 6:54. The Panthers scored nine-straight points to come within just one point at 4:03 and then took the lead just two minutes later and quickly expanded it to six points over the closing minutes to secure the victory. 

For Old Westbury, junior Pedro Marquez led all players in the game with 31 points, including hitting an impressive nine three-pointers, while also dishing out a game-high five assists. Two other Panthers scored in double-figures, as senior Alan McDonald had 16 and junior Justin Alleyne-Washington drained 13 to go along with a team-best six rebounds. 

The Mariners will close out the 2018-19 season this Saturday afternoon, Feb. 16, with a road game at Mount St. Mary College beginning at 3 p.m. at the Knights' Kaplan Center. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page
