BRONX, N.Y. (Feb. 2, 2019) – The USMMA men's basketball team escaped the College of Mount St. Vincent with a 53-52 victory over the Dolphins at the Peter Jay Sharp Center on Wednesday night. The win improves the Mariners' record to 8-13 (6-11 Skyline), while CMSV falls to 6-16 (5-12 Skyline).
Three players scored in double-figures for Merchant Marine, as sophomore Seth Barnes (Chillcothe, Ohio) and James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) as well as freshman Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) all had 12 points apiece. Barnes and Bucher both added six rebounds apiece, as did junior Will Quigley (Trumbull, Conn.), while senior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) led the Mariners with seven boards.
The Mariners led nearly the entire first half and took a 29-19 lead into the halftime break. The Dolphins fought back to take the lead midway through the second half and built it up to as many as six points, 47-41, at 6:49.
The turning point of the game came when USMMA rattled off a 12-2 run in the closing minutes to go ahead 53-49 with just 58 seconds left. CMSV answered with a three-pointer on its next possession, and was able to get the ball back late for a final shot, but missed a potential game-winning three as time expired.
For Mount St. Vincent, junior Raiquis Harris scored a game-high 13 points and two other Dolphins joined him in double-figures – senior Jason Barrera and freshman Kalos Evans, who both contributed 11 points. Barrera recorded a double-double, as he secured a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Mariners are back in action this Sunday, Feb. 10, when they host Skyline opponent Yeshiva University on Senior Day. Tipoff against the Maccabees is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
