Mariners Fall To St. Joe’s-Brooklyn, 66-49, Thursday Night At Home

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2019) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost its home Skyline tilt Thursday night to visiting St. Joseph's of Brooklyn, 66-49, inside the Liebertz Gymnasium. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 7-12 (5-10 Skyline), while the Bears improve to 8-13 (7-10 Skyline) with the victory. 

Freshman Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) and sophomore James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) both drained a team-high 13 points apiece, while junior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) added 12. Bucher added four rebounds and four steals, while Green secured five boards and dished out a team-best four assists. 

Senior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) led all players in the game with 10 rebounds and five steals to go along with six points. Junior Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) rounded out the Mariner scorers with five points off the bench. 

The two teams traded three-pointers to start the game, with the Bears hitting one first and Merchant Marine responding with its own which sparked a 13-0 run that saw the Mariners lead by a game-best 10 points, 13-3, at 15:47. 

SJC fought all the way back to tie the game up at 20-20 at 7:02 after a 17-7 run. The visitors then raced out to an eight-point advantage at 3:11 with eight-straight points. USMMA scored the final four points of the first half and went into the locker room at halftime trailing 28-24. 

Just under five minutes into the second half, the Bears' lead hit double-digits before reaching a game-high 20 points, 51-31, at 12:02. The Mariners did fight back to within 11 points after a 14-5 run made it 56-45 with just 4:32 to play, however St. Joe's finished the game on a 10-4 run to secure the victory. 

Junior Sebastien Etheart led the Bears with 18 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Classmate Kavan Meiner added 13 and sophomore Frank Reali drained 11. Both Meiner and Reali recorded five boards apiece, and junior Dimitri Sirakis registered a game-high five assists on the night. 

The Mariners return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2, when they travel up to the Bronx to face Skyline rival SUNY Maritime. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Privateers' Riesenberg Gymnasium.
