PURCHASE, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2019) – The USMMA men's basketball team dropped its road, Skyline Conference game up at Purchase College, 79-52, on Saturday. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 6-11 (4-9 Skyline), while the Panthers improve to 10-9 (8-6 Skyline) with the win.
Senior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) led Merchant Marine with 12 points on the afternoon, while junior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) contributed nine and freshman Matt Cooper (Hartsdale, N.Y.) added eight. Freshman Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) had eight points and a team-high six rebounds.
The game featured numerous lead-changes in the opening seven minutes. After the Mariners went ahead 13-10 at 13:25, Purchase scored the next 14 points in under four minutes to take either team's first double-digit lead of the day after a three-point play at 9:44. The Panthers took a 49-36 lead into the halftime break.
Early in the second half, USMMA cut the deficit down to just seven points, 53-46, at 15:25, but that was the closest they would come the rest of the game.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Panthers, with senior Willie Britton leading all players in the game with 23 points, as well as five steals. Junior Elijah Lott scored 17 to go along with a game-high eight rebounds and five assists. Classmate Maxx Miller chipped in with 16 points, while senior Michael Soffer had 10 points.
The Mariners are back in action on Tuesday night, Jan. 29, when they host St. Joseph's-Long Island at 7:30 p.m. at the Liebertz Gym. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
