KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2019) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost its home, Skyline conference contest to Sarah Lawrence College, 61-51, on Wednesday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 6-10 (4-8 Skyline), while the Gryphons improve to 12-7 (10-4 Skyline) with the win.

Freshman Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) and junior Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) both had a team-high nine points apiece, while junior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) added eight on the night. Senior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) led Merchant Marine with nine rebounds and four assists and he also contributed six points in the affair. Sophomore James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) also had six, while freshman Matt Cooper (Hartsdale, N.Y.) chipped in with five off the bench.

The Mariners led for most of the game, but a barrage of three-pointers by Sarah Lawrence in the second half gave the Gryphons momentum and allowed them to pull away for the victory.

After the two teams traded threes the Mariners were up by 12 points, 43-31, with 14:10 to play. Over the next 3.5 minutes, the Gryphons hit five more threes and eventually took their first lead of the night, 46-45, at 8:57 after freshman Andrew Varoli hit his sixth trey of the game and fourth in four minutes.

The visitors' lead got up to as many as eight points, 55-47, with 1:44 to play, but the Mariners scored the next four points to trail by just four, 55-51, with exactly a minute to play. After a quick steal and a long, failed possession, USMMA fouled late to try and get back into in, but SLC nailed all six of its free-throws in the final minute to secure the win.

Varoli ended the night with a game-high 20 points for the Gryphons on 6-of-9 shooting with six three-pointers. Freshman Omar Jamaleddine added 18 and seven rebounds, while sophomore Enike Anyia brought down a game-high 12 rebounds.

Up next, the Mariners will travel up to Westchester County this Saturday, Jan. 26, for a road Skyline matchup against Purchase College beginning at 2 p.m. Live stats for the game will be available at this link
