KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 17, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team lost a tough Skyline battle to rival SUNY Maritime, 57-52, at home Thursday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 5-9 (3-7 Skyline), while the Privateers improve to 3-13 (2-9 Skyline) with the win.
Freshman Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) nearly recorded a double-double with nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Sophomore Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) led the Mariners' scorers with 14 points off the bench, while freshman Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) added 12. Junior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) led all players in the game with eight assists on the evening.
The Privateers led from start to finish, as they went into the half with a 27-13 lead after holding USMMA to just 14.8% shooting in the opening frame.
The Mariners made it very interesting late in the second, however.
After Maritime went ahead by as many as 15 points, 32-17, at 17:34, Merchant Marine clawed all the way back to within just four points, 42-38, at 6:52 after a 21-10 run. The visitors' lead went back up to double-digits quickly, though, but once again the Mariners fought back to four, this time with just 33 seconds remaining in the game.
They fouled to put the Privateers at the line late, and Maritime shot just 1-for-4 from the line in the final 30 seconds, but the Mariners were unable to take advantage, as time ran out on the comeback.
For SUNY Maritime, junior Brendan McGovern led all players in the game with 25 points with five three-pointers. Sophomore Brennan Whelan contributed nine points, while freshman Ronan Doherty brought down a team-best 13 rebounds and led the Privateers with six assists.
The Mariners will hit the hardwood next this coming Saturday, Jan. 19, when they travel to Brooklyn to play Skyline opponent St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Bears' Hill Center. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
