KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 12, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team defeated visiting Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary, 62-53, on Saturday afternoon inside the Liebertz Gym. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 4-8 (2-6 Skyline), while the Knights fall to 9-6 (6-4 Skyline) in defeat.
Senior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) led all players in the game with 16 points and 16 rebounds. He was one of three Mariners to score in double-figures, as junior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) added 12 and sophomore James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) drained 10 with a trio of three-pointers and a free throw.
Sophomore Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) contributed nine points off the bench, and junior Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) hit two big three-pointers in the second half to finish the day with six points.
The two teams traded the lead six times over the first 12 minutes of the game until Mount St. Mary went on a 10-2 run to take its largest lead of the day, nine points (21-12), at 4:53. USMMA responded with a 10-2 run of their own to come back within one at 1:24 when a layup by Green made it 23-22. The Knights scored the final five points of the half, however, and led by six, 28-22, going into the break.
MSMC held onto the advantage for nearly 15 minutes of the second half, grabbing leads as high as seven points, but the Mariners tied the score up at 45-45 with 4:38 to play. Green gave Merchant Marine its first lead of the half when he drained 1-of-2 free throws following a technical foul on the Mount St. Mary bench.
That tech. seemed to have changed the momentum of the game, as the Mariners rattled off an 8-2 run to go ahead by seven with just 1:56 to play. Their lead got back down to just four points with 36 seconds to go, but Barnes nailed two free throws and Green buried four to keep the Knights at bay and claim the victory.
Mount St. Mary was led by junior Kendall Francis, who recorded a double-double with a team-best 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Nick Lucas added seven points off the bench and three other players scored six points each. Junior Tristan Millett led all players in the game with five assists.
