NEW YORK (Dec. 13, 2018) – The USMMA men's basketball team traveled into Manhattan to Yeshiva University on Thursday night for a Skyline Conference tilt against the reigning league champion Maccabees. The host Macs used a strong second half performance to come out on top with a 79-58 victory. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 1-7 (0-5 Skyline), while Yeshiva improves to 7-5 (7-2 Skyline) with the win.

Two Mariners scored a team-high 11 points apiece – senior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) and freshman Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.). Freshman Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) added nine points off the bench, while sophomore Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) had eight, junior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) contributed seven and sophomore James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) and freshman Matt Cooper (Hartsdale, N.Y.) chipped in with six points each.

The Macs raced out to a 13-5 lead seven minutes into the game, and held the Mariners at arm's length most of the first until Merchant Marine fought all the way back to within one point, 28-27, with just 4:32 to go in the half. Yeshiva hit back-to-back threes in less than a minute to go back ahead by seven, 34-27, at 3:48. The Mariners came within two late, 34-32, at 1:25, but a 5-2 run to finish the half by the Maccabees put the hosts ahead 39-34 into the break.

YU came out strong to start the second half, scoring the first 12 points to take a 51-34 lead at 13:17 and the Macs' advantage did not fall below double digits the rest of the way.

Leading the way for Yeshiva was freshman Ryan Turell, who drained 31 points on 12-for-17 shooting. Two other Maccabees scored in double-digits, as junior Gabriel Leifer recorded a double-double, as he had 15 points and tied Washington for the game-high with 13 rebounds, and classmate Simcha Halpert registered 11 points. The Macs shot 54.2-percent from the field on the night (32-for-59).
