FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Dec. 6, 2018) – The visiting U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team lost on the road Thursday night to Farmingdale State, 96-58, in Skyline Conference action. The Mariners fall to 0-5 (0-3 Skyline) with the loss, while the Rams improve to 6-2 (4-0 Skyline) in victory.
Junior Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) led the Mariners with a season-high 12 points in 27 minutes off the bench, including two 3-pointers, to go along with six rebounds - with four of those on the offensive end. Sophomore Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) followed with seven points, while freshman Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) and juniors Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.), Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) and Michael Bell (Ashburn, Va.) contributed with six points each, with McDonough totaling six rebounds and Green dishing out four assists.
The Rams got off to an early 3-0 lead and never looked back, leading for the entirety of the game. The Mariners countered with a Green jumper at 18:15, but the Rams went on a 12-2 run over the next 3:33, and held a 15-4 advantage with 14:42 to go in the first half.
The Mariners were able to cut the deficit to 21-15, thanks to back-to-back layups by Morsberger, baskets each by sophomore James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) and McDonough, and a 3-pointer from Bell, which led to a Farmingdale State timeout at 10:01.
After a scoreless two-plus minutes, the Rams went on an 18-11 run to take a 39-26 lead at the 3:27 mark, and they ended the first half on top, 45-32.
Farmingdale State came out strong in the second half, knocking down four 3-pointers in the first 5:18 of the half, led by two from senior Matthew Graham and one each from juniors Troy Feeney and Ryan Kennedy. The Rams started the half on a 20-7 run and led 65-39 at the 12:20 mark.
From that point forward, the Rams cruised to the victory, remaining undefeated in conference play.
Farmingdale State connected on 12-of-27 3-pointers, led by three each from junior Anthony Miller Jr. (13 points total) and Graham (team-high 14 points). Feeney scored 12 points and senior George Riefenstahl notched a team-high six rebounds.
