KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2018) – This past Tuesday, members of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's and women's basketball team, along with their coaches, took part in a community service project. The Mariners got together and braved the chilly and windy weather to go to nearby Kings Point Park to help clean up the park and surrounding areas.
The project was the brainchild of senior David Washington (Frisco, Texas), who organized it and coordinated with local officials to let them know it was being completed.
Many of the Midshipmen at USMMA use the park, which is located just a few blocks from the Academy's front gate, for its running trails and other facilities.
Both teams used the experience to help the community and to bond with each other.
"During our time here for fall break, we've had a lot of down-time between practices and lifts," said Washington. "So it was really good to get out there and take some time to help out in the community. I think it is important to remember how fortunate we are to have the opportunities that we do on a daily basis, and in return, be willing to lend out a helping hand whenever possible."
