Men’s Hoops Suffers 75-58 Setback At Mount St. Vincent Wednesday Night

BRONX, N.Y. (Feb. 7, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team dropped its road Skyline Conference game up at Mount St. Vincent, 75-58, on Wednesday night at the Dolphins' Peter Jay Sharp Center. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 9-11 (7-9 Skyline), while CMSV improves to 15-7 (13-4 Skyline). 

Senior George Hatzioannides (Oakland Gardens, N.Y.) led three USMMA players in double-figures with 15 points, while freshman Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) added 13 and sophomore Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) drained 11. Junior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) and senior Stephen Hinton (Warrenton, Va.) both tied for the team-high with four rebounds, as Washington also tied for the game-best with three steals. Senior Robbie Kennedy (Spring Lake, N.J.) led the Mariner bench with six points. 

Play was close throughout the first seven minutes of the game before Mount St. Vincent built up a nine-point lead, 17-8, at 9:25. Merchant Marine cut it back down to three twice, including with under a minute to go, but the hosts nailed a three with 17 seconds left and took a 30-24 advantage into the halftime break. 

The Dolphins' lead didn't reach double-digits until the 12:02 mark of the second, and it only fell below for the minute-plus after, before CMSV used a 15-4 run to take its largest lead of the night (18 points, 60-42) at 7:41. The Mariners were only able to cut it back down to as little as 14 points twice before Mount St. Vincent claimed the victory. 

For the Dolphins, seniors Ammad Alkhulaidi and Andrew Curiel both posted double-doubles, with Alkhulaidi leading all players with 17 points to go along with 12 rebounds and Curiel adding 16 points and a game-high 13 boards. 

The Mariners are back at it this Sunday, Feb. 11, when they play host to Yeshiva at 2 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Prior to tipoff, the men's basketball program will pay tribute to its five graduating seniors with a special Senior Day Ceremony.
