FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team lost its Skyline Conference contest at Farmingdale State, 82-64, on Tuesday night at the Rams' Walter A. Lynch Sports Center. With the setback, the Mariners' record falls to 6-8 (4-6 Skyline), while FSC improves to 10-4 (8-2 Skyline).
For the second-straight game (and third in the past four), freshman James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) recorded a 20-point contest, as he drained a game-high 25, thanks in part to five three-pointers, while also bringing down a team-best six rebounds and tying for the team-high with three assists. Classmate Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) chipped in with 10 points and senior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) added eight. Off the bench, freshman Jesse Neloms (Memphis, Tenn.) contributed six points and three assists .
The Mariners scored the first points of the game on a three by Barnes and then later led 4-2 for over two minutes until Farmingdale pulled ahead, 5-4, with their own three at 16:11. The advantage quickly increased to double-digits after a 13-0 run ended with the Rams up, 15-4, at 13:11. The hosts' lead only fell under double-digits once more, on the Mariners' next basket, but then remained in double-figures the remainder of the game, hitting as high as 30 points at 6:05 of the second half.
Four of Farmingdale's five starters scored in double-digits with junior Matthew Graham leading the way with 12 points. Sophomore Troy Feeney added 11 points and junior George Riefenstahl and senior Liam Monaghan both had 10 points apiece. Feeney and sophomore Jermaine Fraser both pulled down a game-high seven rebounds each. Riefenstahl also led all players with four assists.
Merchant Marine returns to the hardwood this Sunday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Brooklyn to face Skyline opponent St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn.
