PURCHASE, N.Y. (Feb. 18, 2017) – On Saturday, the USMMA men's basketball team concluded its 2016-17 season with a road loss at Skyline Conference opponent Purchase, 67-66. The Mariners end the year with an 8-17 record (4-12 Skyline), while the Panthers improve to 16-9 (10-6 Skyline) and will play in the Skyline Tournament next week.
In the final game of his career, senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) led all players in the contest with 22 points. He was one of three Mariners in double-figures, as junior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) contributed 14 points and senior Hunter Jones (Goodyear, Ariz.) added 10.
Sophomore David Washington (Frisco, Texas) grabbed down a game-high 11 rebounds in the losing effort and freshman Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) drained eight points to lead the Merchant Marine bench.
The Mariners held the lead for the entire game, getting it up to as much as 12 points, 32-20, in the first half before taking a 39-30 lead into the halftime break. In the second half, the advantage reached its highest of the contest, 17 points, at 14:04, when Miller hit a jumper to make the score 49-32.
However, the Panthers kept chipping away at the USMMA lead until eventually tying the game, 62-62, with exactly four minutes to play. After the Mariners went back ahead by four, 66-62, with 2:16 to play, Purchase finished the game on a 5-0 run, including draining the go-ahead bucket with 14 ticks remaining. Merchant Marine missed two three-pointers in the final seconds as time ran out.
The Panthers also had three players score in double-digits with junior Brian Berrios leading the team with 15 points. Sophomore Deshawn Cann scored 13 and junior Nikeem Deleon added 12, while also bringing down a team-high seven boards.
