Mariners Suffers 78-55 Home Loss To Sage On Senior Day

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2017) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost its home Skyline Conference contest to Sage on Senior Day Saturday, 78-55, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 7-16 (3-11 Skyline) on the season, while the Gators improve to 14-9 (10-4 Skyline) with the victory.
 
Prior to the contest, the men's basketball program paid tribute to its three graduating seniors with a special Senior Day Ceremony honoring Drew Thorpe (Cornwall, N.Y.), Hunter Jones (Goodyear, Ariz.) and Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) for their hard work and dedication to the team throughout their careers.
 
On the court, Miller led all players in the game with 20 points, while Thorpe added 10 off the bench. Sophomore David Washington (Frisco, Texas) had a team-best seven rebounds and Jones dished out a game-high four assists.
 
For Sage, senior Marcus Patterson led the way with 19 points and a game-best nine rebounds. Junior Wayne Weir contributed 15 points off the bench and classmate Thiago Conceicao led all players on the afternoon with four blocks.
 
Throughout today's men's and women's basketball doubleheader, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Athletics Department hosted its inaugural "It's On Us Day." Fun activities such as trivia, music trivia, halftime games of knockout and a pie-eating contest between games were staged during the day. Anyone that signed up to take the "It's On Us" pledge to do their part to stop sexual assault and sexual harassment were given a KP It's On Us t-shirt. Up next, Merchant Marine will host Mount St. Mary in the final home game of the 2016-17 season this Tuesday night, Feb. 14.
