BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 8, 2017) – Despite four players scoring in double-figures, the USMMA men's basketball team was defeated by Sarah Lawrence College, 72-60, on the road Wednesday night in Skyline Conference action. The Mariners' record drops to 7-15 overall (3-10 Skyline) on the season, while the Gryphons improve to 8-14 (4-9 Skyline) with the victory.
Sophomore David Washington (Frisco, Texas) recorded a double-double with career-highs of 17 points and 21 rebounds. The 21 boards were the most by a Mariner in at least the last five seasons. Freshman Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) and sophomore Kijona Henley (Smithfield, Va.) both added 13 points and senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points.
The hosts led from wire-to-wire, with their advantage hitting double-digits, 23-11, at 10:45 of the opening half. SLC ended the first half with a 15-point lead, 40-25.
After falling behind by as many as 22 points, 49-27, early in the second, the Mariners fought all the way back to just nine points, 66-57, at 2:33 after going on a long 30-17 run throughout the half. It was not enough, however, as the Gryphons pushed their advantage back up to double-digits with under a minute to play and it didn't fall below again.
Sarah Lawrence also had four players scored in double-digits – senior Graham Gilleran with 16 points and classmate Jeff Jordan and freshmen BJ Sanders and Joseph Kleeman all with 10 each. Gilleran brought down a team-best eight rebounds while also leading all players in the game with five assists and five blocks.
The Mariners will host Skyline opponent Sage this Saturday, Feb. 11, as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
