KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 4, 2017) – The USMMA men's basketball team defeated visiting Skyline Conference divisional opponent SUNY Maritime on Saturday afternoon, 84-81, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The win improves the Mariners' record to 6-14 (3-9 Skyline), while the Privateers fall to 8-12 (3-8 Skyline).

Earlier in the day, before the contest, the Merchant Marine men's basketball program held an Alumni Day event. A handful of former Mariners were on hand to meet with the team and play a couple of pick-up games. It was another successful event, as it has been year-after-year.

Freshman Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) had a phenomenal day for the Mariners, leading all players with a career-high 29 points, including shooting 9-for-12 from long range. Classmate Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) added 23 points, which was also his career-best, and senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) contributed 20, including the final four points for Merchant Marine in the last minute of action – with two free throws with just 23 seconds remaining that made the score 84-81.

Miller and junior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) both had a team-best six rebounds.

SUNY Maritime built up a lead of as many as 11 points, 39-28, at 6:55 of the first half, but the Mariners finished the half on a 16-6 run capped off by a buzzer beating three by Sobocinski that brought the hosts within just one, 45-44, going into the halftime break.

The Privateers held the lead for just over half of the second frame, until the Mariners took a one-point advantage, 65-64, at 9:34. USMMA's lead reached as high as six points, 72-66, at 5:57. The Mariners held on to the lead down the stretch and SUNY Maritime missed two three-pointers in the final 10 seconds that would've tied the game.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Privateers, as junior Patrick MacDonald led the way with 22, while also recording a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior Tim Hoch added 17, senior Brendan Halligan had 15 and junior Tim McQuail contributed 12.

The Mariners return to the hardwood on Monday night, Feb. 6, when they travel down to Camden, N.J., for a non-conference tilt against Rutgers-Camden. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Scarlet Raptors' Athletics and Fitness Center. Live stats for the contest will be available by following this link.
