KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 28, 2017) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost its home Skyline Conference contest to Farmingdale State, 82-62, on Saturday afternoon at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The defeat drops the Mariners to 5-13 (2-8 Skyline) on the season, while the Rams improve to 14-5 (10-0 Skyline).
Junior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) led Merchant Marine with 14 points, while senior Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) contributed 13 and a team-best six rebounds. Freshman Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) added eight points and three other Mariners chipped in with six points apiece – seniors Hunter Jones (Goodyear, Ariz.) and Drew Thorpe (Cornwall, N.Y.) and junior Kijona Henley (Smithfield, Va.).
For Farmingdale State, sophomore Matthew Graham drained a game-high 20 points. He nailed six three-pointers in the game, including five in the second half. Junior Liam Monaghan finished with 14 points and senior Weldon Irvine led all players in the game with 11 rebounds.
Up next, Merchant Marine travels to the Bronx on Tuesday night, Jan. 31, for a Skyline affair with Mount St. Vincent. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Dolphins' Peter Jay Sharp Center.
